Not what you expect

When it comes to a BGR, have you ever thought about what characteristics you would look for in your boyfriend/girlfriend? Was relatively enlightened regarding this today by a more mature adult :) Here are the pointers that she pointed out, maybe some of us can take a look and reflect upon it :) By the way, this is from a Christian perspective but it's still very relevant.

1) Devotion to Christ
2) Right beliefs
3) Sexual purity
4) Willingness to serve, humility
5) Right priorities
6) Commitment to church
7) Loving attitude (to others)
8) Self-control
9) Honesty
10) Inner beauty
11) Responsibility
12) Relationship with parents

These 12 pointers may seem a little too much to digest for the moment but they are definitely worth a thought. I don't know about you but when I heard about these characteristics, I'm (frankly speaking) quite shocked. I was expecting something more along the lines of 'humourous/good-looking/romantic'.....hahaha, basically what most girls would want or the kind of ideal that you see on TV. However, after thinking about it, the above characteristics are more logical and practical, because after all, we live in a real world, not in the kind of virtual world that we see portrayed on TV and if we really think hard about it, these are qualities that would assure a committed and long-lasting relationship.
But before we start looking for these qualities in a mate, my personal belief is that we should first aim to possess these qualities ourselves. I believe that in any relationship that one has (be it parent-child/boyfriend-girlfriend etc), we ought to first reflect on our personal attitudes & behaviour and seek to improve ourselves...it's all about changing ourselves and not about changing others, because ultimately, we cannot force others to change but we can make a stand to be the kind of person that we would like to see in others or want others to be :) So, the above mentioned qualities are as much about ourselves as it is about others. Think about personal development :) Before you go looking for a mate with these qualities, first ask yourself whether you meet the criteria too...as my father would say, "As much as you are choosing others, bear in mind that others are choosing you too" (this will sound better or make more sense in Chinese, heehee...)
