Diversity
The purpose of diversity is that each member should be interdependent upon the other. (In a sense, this means that we are meant to depend on others and to be depended upon by others.) The fact that we are different enables us to compliment each other. (Imagine if all of us are completely alike, that would probably be rather boring because everyone will basically be doing the same things and behaving the same way.) Yet, sadly, it is often our differences that divide us and become the cause of disharmony. We need to learn to understand one another and appreciate our differences. (The word 'understand' actually carries many meanings. Being able to understand requires us to grasp or perceive the meaning of a certain idea, it could also mean to be familiar with something or somebody. In the context of this particular sentence, 'understand' can take on the meaning of 'accept tolerantly/sympathetically'. This requires us to see the individual traits of others as something that ia a part of them, not really seeking to change them but rather having a compassionate and sensitive heart to see where they are coming from and learning to recognize and respect differences. In other words, we should learn to celebrate diversity instead of condemning it.)
